Q'uo speaks warmly of animals as second-density beings on their own long journey of evolution, and of the special role a loving bond with humans plays in it. Answering directly about animals and their destiny, Q'uo says that by loving your pet you awaken in an instinctual creature a dawning awareness of itself — a selfhood it would not otherwise have. Species are described as arising from a group thought-form or gene pool (Q'uo playfully coins "catness" as the example) out of which individual creatures emerge.

When a pet and its person are deeply devoted to one another, that mutual investment of love and consciousness can be enough that the second-density creature becomes harvestable to third density — able, in time, to graduate into personhood, a spirit "with breath."
